These are new posts due to an increase in workload. The intended post is based on a 10 PA contract but the appointee may be offered one extra PA due to the clinical workload.
The Job:
A district wide Histology and Cytology service is provided by the Department. The laboratory service is closely integrated with a centralised laboratory processing system situated for tissue processing with consultant histopathologist staff at both sites. The laboratory is situated in a modern environment and has CPA accreditation. Facilities for micro and macro photography and immunofluorescence (but not electron microscopy) are available.
Consultant Responsibilities:
The appointee will be expected to participate in clinical audit and continuing professional development (CPD), and in relevant quality assurance and proficiency testing.
Consultants in the department participate in the Regional General Histopathology EQA, National Breast Screening EQA, Colon EQA and other EQAs related to their special interests.
The laboratory participates in the National Cell Path Technique NEQAS and Immunocytochemistry NEQAS.
The appointee, together with the agreement of consultant colleagues, will be responsible for the provision of the routine histopathology and cytology (but not gynae cytology) service including the autopsy work. No clinical FNA service is provided.
The appointee will be expected to participate in the management of the service. The configuration of responsibilities will be reviewed from time to time and the appointee will be expected to work with consultant colleagues to provide a reliable and expeditious service.
The histopathology departments at both hospitals take part in and run various clinic-pathological multidisciplinary meetings.
The appointee is expected to be involved in the teaching of specialist registrars and other personnel as required.
The post holder will be expected to take an active role in the development of effective resource management and to support the Clinical services Director in preparing business plans for the service.
Person Specification:
MBBS or equivalent,
FRCPath or equivalent.
Full GMC registration
A high standard of clinical skill and expertise in histopathology and in those areas of cytopathology which are relevant to the workloads of the laboratory.
Able to take responsibility for delivering the Histopathology service without supervision
Willingness to work as a member of the team and to assist in administrative responsibilities
Ability to communicate effectively with clinical, scientific and managerial colleagues
Experience of and commitment to medical audit.
Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies.
Participation in a continuing professional development scheme (CPD), and evidence of participation.
